SESSIONS YOU WOULD LIKE TO LEAD:

Use the space below to talk about proposed sessions. Remember, the actual sessions must be proposed at the conference itself. Adding items here is a way to think about things ahead of time.

Please write below:

a. session name

b. your name as moderator

c. a brief description of the session, issues etc...

d. be as specific as possible with your session ideas.  for instance, something like 'how social media affects tradtional publishing' is way too broad a topic and could be focused down to maybe 3 or 4 different sessions lead by different people.  any questions please ask.

  • Building a Better Music Ecosystem: Charles McEnerney, Musicians for Music 2.0The old models of making money in the music business are going away, but the new models are still being defined. Music discovery sites/technology will help music fans discover new music so that musicians can make a profit, but a better ecosystem needs to be fostered so that the power shift is not simply from radio, record labels, retail, and magazines over to iTunes and Amazon. This session is to discuss some of the ideas behind this hybrid concept somewhere between an incubator, a foundation, and a venture fund--and how to make the idea stronger.

  • Managing Distributed Software Teams: Keith MacKay, Village Software. What best practices should you be using to avoid disaster? I am responsible for between 40 and 80 projects per year, ranging in size from very small to enterprise-level. We've done these with single- or multi-person teams: entirely onsite at the customer location, entirely in our office, entirely offshore, or a mix of all three. I'm happy to share things that have worked and (maybe more importantly), things that have NOT. I'd love to learn the same from you. How do you contend with cultural differences (and what differences can you expect)? What types of projects work well with distributed teams? What tools facilitate the process? How do you handle communications? Specs? Payment? Change orders? QA? Bug tracking? Source code control? Coding standards? Project planning? Development environments?

  • Balancing Act between Product and Services: Chuck Goldman, Apperian.  If your company is a product company who is looking to provide services to deliver your product or a services company looking to create a product from the services you provide then come join us for this session to discuss the challenges of managing this process and balancing resources appropriately.

  • Identifying and Recruiting a Board of Advisors: Bill Shander, buzub | Beehive Media If you are curious, as I am, about how to manage this delicate process, please join me and to discuss some techniques and strategies for assembling an appropriate board.  We will need some to join us who are from the other side of the table - those with experience achieving this task and/or serving in the role of advisor - to help us along.

  • How can we turbocharge the culture of entrepreneurship in Massachusetts? Scott Kirsner, Boston Globe, with Tim Rowe, David Beisel, Shawn Broderick, Gus Weber, Don Dodge, and Tom Summit. Let's brainstorm about existing initiatives that need more support/marketing/funding/momentum, and new initiatives that could help further enhance the new culture of entrepreneurship here.

  • "Beyond Brick and Mortar: Mobile/Web Applications for Offline Businesses" (ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION) Josh Bob, Founder of Textaurant,. Discuss creative ways to help offline businesses (think restaurants, hardware shops, hair salons, doctors' offices) take their businesses to the next level through the use of mobile applications or webapps. Note: This is not a discussion on marketing, so "Just use Twitter and Facebook" isn't really the idea. Let's generate some business / app ideas and see where we can take them!

  • Cracking the Code of Angel Investment  Bettina Hein, Founder of Pixability, Inc., Technology companies need funding and entrepreneurs often look to angel investors to provide it. How do you find angel investors? What are they looking for? What are current trends in angel investing?  This session is aimed at helping those raising funds to gain knowledge and insight on the process and get first-hand tips. If you have received angel investment before or are an angel investor: come and share your expertise and experiences.

  • “Dyeing The Management Team’s Hair Gray.” Max Winograd, President, NuLabel Technologies, Inc.  How does a young, inexperienced founding team get their first seasoned entrepreneur, executive, or industry veteran to jump on board and ride the startup rollercoaster? First round investors make bets on teams, and one of the greatest impediments to young teams securing outside seed investment is the “experience risk.” By that same token, finding and recruiting an experienced entrepreneur, executive, or industry veteran is a difficult challenge for a young founding team to undertake when the team is cash-strapped and self-funded. I’d like to approach this topic by breaking down each part of the process – identifying the experience need; identifying possible candidates to join the team; approaching these potential management team members; recruiting - including what some typical incentive and recruitment deals look like for bootstrapped companies; and adjusting the company culture and management structure to reflect the change. I’d like the dynamic of the session to revolve around the experiences of others at each step in management team development.

  • Learning to Dodge the Bullets That Kill Startups -  John Prendergast, CEO & Co-founder, Value Media. Most startups fail but it doesn't need to be that way. This is a discussion of how to increase your chances of startup success through the Lean Startup and Customer Development approaches sweeping the west coast. Think of this two part conversation as a warm up for Eric Ries sold out appearance at MIT on November 19 presented by an entrepreneur whose currently walking the walk and looking for others interested in supporting one another in this approach.

Basics of the approach - Discussion of the Customer Development and Lean Startup methodologies developed by Steve Blank (E.piphany founder) and Eric Ries (IMVU, Kleiner Perkins Venture Advisor). We’ll discuss the underlying reasons that startups fail and some proven methodologies that can help you reduce your company’s flameout risk including identifying common management beliefs that kill companies, why speed in some areas can hurt you and why agile development alone isn’t sufficient for getting it right.

Building a local support system - Develop a local support system to help entrepreneurs to support one another in building companies using lean methodologies. Including a discussion of resources for learning more about these approaches and how to connect with others who are actively working on companies that are applying these methods.
